Bedford's Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is provided for the use of Bedford Borough Council residents only. It is located on Barkers Lane, Bedford. Householders can use this facility to recycle and dispose of their household waste. Before bringing waste to the site make sure you check whether you need to get a free permit.
Opening Hours
Daily: 9am - 5pm
Late night opening: SATURDAY ONLY Between 1st April and 30th September 9am-7pm.
CLOSED: Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. The site closes at 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
Please note: Last entrance to the site is 10 minutes before the closing time published above. This is to allow the site to be thoroughly cleaned and secured for overnight.
We accept the following items;
We do not accept Asbestos, Sectioned Trees with diameter greater than 30cm, Animal Faeces and beddings, telegraph poles and railway sleepers.
Disposable BBQs: Help us prevent fire and keep your recycling centre safe during these summer months. Please wait at least a day to make sure the ashes are completely cold before disposal on site.
Mattresses: If you are disposing of a mattress at this site, you might be asked to fill in a waste disclaimer form. The site is currently getting an influx of mattresses and it is considered that some of this waste is coming from private landlords. Bedford Borough Council reserves the right to monitor waste quantities deposited on this site and where required take necessary action to stop any abuse.
Small amounts of trade/commercial waste can now be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Barkers Lane, for a charge.
Small quantities of demolition waste (soil, brick, rubble, doors, household fitted items) are accepted if it is from your own home. You will need to obtain a free permit BEFORE you visit.
For DIY waste, visits are restricted to 1 trip per month, 6 items per month.
You will also need a permit if you are planning to bring a van or a pickup, or a car towing a single axle trailer (from 1.2m x 0.9m up to 1.8m x 1.2m).
Permits are free and easily available; you can either apply online, or you can call us on 01234 718013.
If you have a large quantity of waste you will need to make alternative arrangements e.g. hiring a skip.
Please note, if you are hiring a vehicle you will need to bring your hire documents with you when you visit the site.
The following WILL NOT have access to the site:
Any vehicle with more than 4 wheels
Any trailer more than 1.8m long x 1.2m wide
Any twin axle trailer
Any tipper
